The Cathedral of Cava, also the seat of the Parish of Cava Centre, is dedicated to St. Adiutore and St. Mary of the Visitation.
Its construction dates back to the 16th century. Over the centuries, the Cathedral of Cava has undergone several renovations, as well as some radical transformations. Today, the structure has a longitudinal layout with three aisles, separated by massive pillars that define the internal space, and features several side chapels. The façade, set on a staircase, overlooks the entire main square of the Historic Centre and has three entrances, located at the inner aisles.
On 30th September 1986, by virtue of a decree Instantibus votis , from the Congregation for Bishops, the Diocese of Cava de' Tirreni was fully merged with Amalfi, and the new diocese assumed the current name of the Diocese of Cava and Amalfi. At the same time, the Cathedral of Cava was granted the title of co-cathedral.
The Cathedral of Cava has a history of restoration, primarily due to natural events such as the 1980 earthquake, which led to the closure of the cathedral for nearly twenty years. It was reopened for worship in December 1999.
In front of the Cathedral, the central square is a beautiful place, famous for its architecture and the presence of a fountain decorated with dolphin statues, which give it its name. In 1865, the terrain was leveled to correct the unevenness of the square, with the goal of restoring the area to its former glory. Recent restoration work has contributed to the refurbishment of the historic Dolphin Fountain, the symbol of the square, and has enhanced the overall appearance of this important urban space.
