Roman Aqueduct

Since ancient times, the water from the springs has been captured and directed toward the valley. An example of this ancient practice is the aqueduct, dating back to Imperial times, located just a short distance from the Frestola Spring. It is still frequented by the people of Cava de' Tirreni, who draw fresh water from it. The name 'Frestola' comes from the Latin word 'fistula,' which refers to the channel dug in the rock through which the water flows.

Continuing along the road through the forest, which veers to the left, you can admire the impressive Roman aqueduct dating back to the 1st-2nd century AD. Its majestic arches are arranged in three tiers. This aqueduct was constructed to supply water to the villa of the Gens Metellia. Thanks to its extraordinary height, this structure is considered one of the most grandiose of its kind still preserved in Italy. With its three tiers of arches, the aqueduct reaches a height of 21 meters.
