The church of S. Maria Maggiore and the Archconfraternity of the Holy Spirit

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, built between 1079 and 1092 by Abbot Peter of the Holy Trinity, is situated on land donated by Prince Gisulfo of Salerno, in a corner of the land that has for centuries welcomed pilgrims and the poor. With its three Gothic-style naves and frescoed walls, the church has always been a spiritual beacon for the community, at the heart of the medieval village of Corpo di Cava. However, the violent earthquake of 1980 forced it to close its doors for many years, leaving it in silence, but never forgotten.

During the restoration between 1986 and 1996, under the guidance of architect Giovanni Messe, the church was reborn. The ancient mullioned windows reappeared from the walls, telling the story of its long history, while the delicate Baroque decorations were restored to their former glory.

Each stone has found its place, and every detail was carefully restored, bringing the church back to the majesty of its original form, with the support of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage. This restoration not only restored the architectural beauty but also gave the community the opportunity to once again pray under its roof, as if time had never passed.
