Church of SS. Salavatore

The Church of the Holy Saviour (SS. Salvatore) is located in Passiano, one of the many hamlets of Cava de' Tirreni, within the Archdiocese of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni. It is dedicated to the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. Founded around the year 1000, it was granted to the Abbey of the SS. Trinity in 1088 and later confirmed under its jurisdiction by Pope Eugene III in 1149 and Pope Alexander III in 1168. The church remained under the Abbey’s control until 1513, when Cava became a Diocese. The building was subsequently demolished and rebuilt between 1743 and 1745 according to the design of architect Paolo Carleo. The church was solemnly consecrated on September 19, 1822, although the liturgical feast is still celebrated on the following day. Following the 1980 earthquake, the church suffered serious damage, rendering it unusable and forcing its closure to the public for several years. During this period, many valuable furnishings and works of art were stolen. However, in 1997, thanks to the dedication of the faithful, major restoration work began, leading to the church’s reopening.
